Stereotypes

Stereotyping is a general description of something or someone, where everything is the same with no individuals. Most stereotypes are harmless, but some can be hurtful to you and those around you. In today’s world there are many stereotypes which effect our way of thinking, and how and what we do. Stereotyping is very unfair and doesn’t give the other person a chance to be who they are. People who are guilty of this have already made up their minds about certain people, and therefore, that is how they will see them whether it’s true of them or not.

I personally don’t like stereotypes because they tend to discriminate against others, and give you the wrong idea about something. Such as, most of the women in the media are good looking and have great bodies, but the average women does not. Another example would be for instance, you’re walking down a street and you see a teen and he/she has wild spiky hair and are in ragged dark clothes, and the first thing you think is that person is a drug dealer or a gangster etc. However, that teenager you saw might be a kind person, who only wanted look different.

There is a very popular stereotype, which is that all policemen are good people that help and protect. I’m not saying that all cops are evil it’s just that some decide to become criminals. Here’s something to think about, a cop would make a good criminal, and a criminal would make a good cop. That essentially means that since cops know how police examine a crime scene they know how to commit a crime, and do it in a way that police wouldn’t be able to catch them. Also, those criminals know the way criminals do thing so that they would know how to catch them easier.

One of the most beautiful things about humans is that each of us is an individual – no two of us is alike. When we stereotype, we miss out on a lot of great friendships or opportunities to learn from each other. Every person has something to contribute to society. Life is so much more interesting and satisfying when we can see people as individuals and discover the wonderful things each person has to offer.
